Habitat for Humanity Choptank Acquires Land for St. Michaels Faith Build Home

Easton, MD (February 4, 2010) – Habitat for Humanity Choptank has acquired a parcel of land on Brooks Lane in St. Michaels which the affiliate will use for the construction of another Habitat home.

The property was purchased from Eugene Deems and Ray Chambers. At the closing, Deems and Chambers made a $10,000 donation to Habitat Choptank. “Ray and I make this gift in appreciation of the Habitat mission and the effort to provide affordable housing in the Brooks Lane area,” noted Deems in presenting the check. “We hope this will be one of many new homes built in this neighborhood.”

This parcel will serve as the site of the St. Michaels Faith Build. The build is a shared effort between Habitat Choptank and three St. Michael’s churches – Christ Church–St. Michael’s Parish, St. Luke’s United Methodist, Church and Union United Methodist Church – and Habitat Choptank to build another affordable home in St. Michaels. The churches will provide much of the volunteer labor for this project and will raise the funds to cover the $75,000 in construction costs. Habitat Choptank is supplying the lot and will provide overall construction supervision. A March groundbreaking is planned.

Habitat Choptank, which was founded in 1992, built its first home in St. Michaels and has continued building in that community over the years. The Faith Build house will be the affiliate’s thirteenth in St. Michaels.

Habitat for Humanity of Choptank is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing in Dorchester and Talbot counties. Since its inception, the organization has worked in partnership with volunteers, churches, community organizations, businesses, and its future homeowners to help 48 local working families achieve homeownership.
